In this election we must face the climate emergency with unprecedented determination for change. And we have a moral responsibility to those struggling right now.
Agriculture and Land Planning
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound is richly endowed with wetlands and prime farmland that must be permanently protected. Land planning can be used to grow and enhance public parks that offer enduring protection for endangered species. We can bring back nature to cities, towns and rural areas, starting with green roofs and school yards, turning surplus parking lots into mini-forests, and creating spaces for communities to gather and children to play – all the while supporting climate-smart agriculture and local sustainable food production. We are one of the few areas in Canada where farming is not just enduring – it is growing. Each new farm represents the tenacity, the commitment and the lifeblood of our way of life.
Supporting Small Business
We must support businesses focusing on people, planet and profits by amending the Ontario Business Corporations Act to add provisions authorizing incorporation of benefit corporations (corporations that use profits and growth as a means to help build an inclusive, sustainable economy). We must support a Green Building Program that creates jobs while helping homeowners, renters and businesses to save money by reducing their energy use. This must include incentives for businesses to invest in energy efficient and low carbon equipment, buildings and vehicle fleets, as well as redirecting business support programs so they encourage the growth of clean-tech companies and green innovation.
Smart, Green and Affordable Housing
Ontario deserves leadership that champions smart growth within existing urban boundaries through gentle density, infilling missing middle developments and offering people more housing choices through expanded zoning options. The Green Party would reinstate the provincial brownfield remediation fund to support rural municipalities in safely building affordable housing on previously industrial sites in existing neighbourhoods.
Fixing our Ailing Health System
We need a health system that works in rural and small town Ontario as well as in its cities, and that abandons no one because of age, condition, background or vulnerability. And it must address our mental health as well as our physical health. Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound is facing increased need for mental health services and a rise in addiction rates and in tragic deaths from opioid use. Isolation, loss of income, fear of illness and fear for our future are triggering mental health conditions and making existing conditions worse. Mental health begins with supportive family, friends and community, good affordable nutrition, exercise, access to nature and safe places to live and work. And when we are overwhelmed, we need rapid access to safe, responsive, respectful, effective mental health and addiction services.
